Does your family need an au pair? We explain the criteria you need to meet to become an au pair host family in Spain.
More details below 👇.
The room provided for the au pair must measure at least 8 m². It must also be furnished with at least one bed 🛏️, a wardrobe, a table and a chair. There must be a window to let in daylight and a door with a lock to give the au pair some privacy. You will also give the au pair access to a bathroom 🚿. The room can be in your home, or close to where you live.
⚠️ No family member is allowed to share the au pair’s room. The au pair must be informed that his/her place of residence will be different from that of the family.
🦋 Advice: We recommend providing a room that is part of the same place where the family lives, in accordance with the values of the programme 👍.
The bedroom you must provide must be at least 9 square meters with a window facing outside. Moreover, the room must be furnished with the necessary furniture 🛏️.
⚠️ The au pair cannot share the room with your children, only the bathroom.
If you don’t have an extra room, you can provide him/her with external accommodation to your house 🏡 or flat. This can be an annex, a maid’s room, a caravan, etc. Keep in mind, the au pair has to be aware about it.
🦋 Advice : We recommend providing a room part of the same place the family lives in, in line with the program’s values 👍.
Contract
It is compulsory to draw up an agreement 🤝 with the au pair before their arrival, in order to define everyone’s rights and obligations. This agreement 📑 describes the duration of the stay, the amount of pocket money, working hours, rest days and holidays, house rules, details on the use of the car (insurance) and other elements that frame the stay. We can draw up the agreement according to the formula you have chosen.
Work and free time
Au pairs are not allowed to work more than 30 hours a week. They are entitled to one full day off per week, including at least one Sunday per month. As far as holidays and paid leave are concerned, it’s up to you to agree the number of days off beforehand. The same applies to public holidays.
⚠️ Overtime must be agreed in advance and must be compensated by free time or pocket money.
Remember to give your au pair some free time so that he/she can visit the country, do activities, take language classes, etc. The costs are borne by the au pair. He/she will be responsible for all expenses.
On your dashboard 🖥️, you can choose the tasks that the au pair will have to carry out as part of his/her contract with you. ☑️ Tick only those tasks that you wish to entrust to the au pair.
⚠️ An au pair takes part in light housework (emptying the dustbin, filling the dishwasher), but cannot be considered as a cleaner.
🦋 Advice: We recommend that you discuss the future timetable with your au pair beforehand, so that it can be included in the contract.
