General conditions
You must be able to cover the expenses involved in hosting an Au Pair: full board 🍝 (three meals a day), accommodation, pocket money, health insurance* 🩺, etc.
💸 In Italy, host families give their Au Pairs around €70 per week. We recommend that our families give €80. This is because the Au Pair Programme is a cultural and linguistic exchange that allows the Au Pair to learn a language through classes and visit the country through activities. This programme requires you to have an open mind 🧠.
You and the Au Pair cannot be of the same nationality 🇮🇹. In addition, you must undertake to welcome the au pair and integrate them as a member of the family, as well as helping them to familiarise themselves with their new environment. This will ensure that everyone has a good stay 👍.
*If necessary, to avoid additional costs, we advise you to take out private insurance regardless of the au pair’s nationality. The family must pay the insurance costs.
Accommodation requirements
The room provided for the au pair must be suitable and at least 8 m² in size. It must also be furnished with the bare minimum (a bed 🛏️, a wardrobe, a table and a chair) or more if possible. There should be a window to let in daylight and a door with a lock to give the Au Pair some privacy. You should also give the Au Pair access to a bathroom 🛀. The room can be in your home, or close to where you live.
⚠️ No family member is allowed to share the Au Pair’s room. The Au Pair must be informed that his/her place of residence will be different from that of the family.
🦋 Advice: We recommend providing a room that is part of the same place as the family’s, as this allows for better integration and creates good relations between you from the start 👍
Conditions for organising the stay
Contract
Drawing up an agreement 🤝 with the au pair and signing the contract before their arrival is compulsory (it is also a requirement for obtaining the visa). The contract defines the duration of the au pair’s stay and the conditions under which he or she will be welcomed (the amount of pocket money, working hours, rest days, house rules, etc.).We can help you with all the administrative formalities, depending on the package you choose: ➡️.
Work and free time
Au pairs are not allowed to work more than 30 hours a week. They are entitled to one full day off a week, preferably a fixed day, and one full weekend a month. Remember to give your au pair some free time so that she/he can visit the country, do activities, take language classes, etc. They will be responsible for all expenses.
As far as holidays, paid leave and Italian public holidays are concerned, it is up to you to make arrangements beforehand to agree on the number of days off. This information will be included in the contract.
⚠️ Overtime must be agreed in advance and must be compensated by free time or pocket money.
On your dashboard 🖥️, you can select the tasks you would like the au pair to carry out. ☑️ Tick only those tasks which you wish the au pair to carry out.
⚠️ An au pair takes part in light household tasks (emptying the dustbin, filling the dishwasher), but cannot be considered as a household employee.
If, as part of his/her work, the au pair has to use a car 🚗 you will provide him/her with a vehicle on which he/she will be insured.
🦋 Advice: We recommend that you discuss the future timetable with your au pair beforehand, so that it can be included in the contract. We know that our families take driving lessons for their au pairs to get them used to driving abroad, which also helps to reassure the families.
⚠️ For a stay of more than 3 months, the family will have to register their au pair with the Registrar’s Office (Anagraphe) and have a social security number. The family will have to pay a flat-rate registration fee. Please contact your local health unit (ASL) for more information.
We are providing you with the European Agreement on Au Pair Placement and its Protocol so that you have as much information as possible on the Au Pair Programme.
